In 1985, the Honolulu Police Department sent Officer Thomas Kaaai to Los Angeles to be certified in teaching the D.A.R.E. curriculum. Upon his return, he taught the Drug Abuse Resistance Education curriculum to 4 local schools on Oahu.
Due to the success of the program, the Honolulu Police Department increased the amount of D.A.R.E. Officers to 21 which enabled the unit to teach the curriculum in every single Elementary School.
Today, the Unit comprises of 8 Honolulu Police Officers who are certified D.A.R.E. Officers that teach the new “Keepin’ it REAL” curriculum to middle schools and elementary schools across the island.
